Rookery South Energy Recovery Facility, Bedford (£300m)

The Energy from Waste (EfW) facility, located in Bedfordshire, was assessed by BPP under BREEAM New Construction and achieved a 'Good' rating

BREEAM New Construction

The 36-month project to construct England’s latest Energy from Wate (EfW) plant in Bedfordshire, completed in 2021. Located near Stewartby, the former brick clay extraction pit now plays host to a sustainable alternative to landfill, where household, commercial, and non-hazardous industrial waste, after composting and recycling efforts, is used as fuel to generate clean electricity.

Achieving a BREEAM ‘Good’ rating, the development will play a vital role in the sustainable disposal of over 545,000 tonnes of waste per annum, generating more than 60 MW of low-carbon energy to meet the demands of 112,500 homes in the area.
